red when excited

State of the Nation

RED When Excited was founded in 1995 (almost 20 years ago now) by four guys who were building games on the Amiga. We shifted into game developer tools for that platform, in addition to taking on contract work in various internet projects including web-design. With the demise of the Amiga, not everyone wanted to switch to the PC and Windows so three of the founders bowed out.

The next period focused on just a few products (Familiar, and AD&D character manager) but really our bread and butter became web-design. Over the years as the field became more and more competative our activity became very hand to mouth. Although we were profitable, it was always difficult. Growth essentially stoppped for almost 10 years.

In 2010 we decided to start developing products again, and introduced iExpression. An iOS app that enabled our customers to update their ExpressionEngine sites while out and about. This product has never made, nor lost, a penny but convinced us that we needed to get back to our roots and build applications.

Since then we’ve experimented whilst continuing with our contract work. In 2012 we launched Cloud Mate. It has been a huge success, and over the last 9 months the product and company has gone from strength to strength. In Decemeber last year we were able to stop taking on new web-development contracts.

With the new found freedom we started developing more tools. Just as we did in the beginning, we’ve been building tools we want to use. In the last two months Cloud Mate has been joined by Sumbolon (Mac Crash log management and symbolification) and most recently Oyster (regular expression or regex tester). We’ve started advertising. We are growing again. To this support this we’ve just hired our first new staff in 10 years. We are delighted that for the first time in our history we are able to hire someone who is not a developer but is solely focused on customer support.

Please join us in welcoming Olly onto the RWE team. Olly is going to look after product and customer support, as well as manage online content. He joins us fresh from college, is currently going through training on all of our products, and will start answering your suppport e-mails in early July.

We really can’t tell you how excited (red or otherwise) we are as we look ahead into the next few years, and just having new blood, new ideas, and a fresh perspective has already begun to impact our thoughts about new versions, new features, and even new products.

For now though, some of those will have to wait. Whilst our Mac products have required almost no changes to support 10.9 Mavericks, iOS 7 is a new beast. We are currently developing the designs for a long over due update to iExpression iOS, and we believe Apple has changed the iOS game in very very exciting ways. Cloud Mate iOS has been undergoing significant rework, and iOS 7 will have an impact on that too. Ahead of the public release, short of bug fixes and smaller features, this is what we are working on now.

So a huge thank you to all of our new customers, and here’s to the future. It’s red, and it’s very, very excited.
Please wait...
